All services requiring a personal appearance in Taipei and Kaohsiung are by appointment only. Appointments must be made online. Please follow the links below.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Please carefully read all of the instructions below, as our requirements differ from instructions on the application forms.

The American Citizen Services Unit accepts passport applications and forwards them to the National Passport Center in New Hampshire for processing. Normal processing time is approximately three weeks.

Many countries in the region do not allow you to enter unless your passport is valid for more than six months. However, your passport can be used for return to the US for up to six months after it expires.

All forms must be completed in English. When supporting documents (such as proof of marriage, divorce, death, birth) are required, they must be in English or accompanied by a certified translation.

RENEWAL OF TEN-YEAR-VALIDITY PASSPORTS

If you are renewing a ten-year-validity passport that expired less than five years ago, please use our mail-in procedures. We strongly encourage you to use this highly efficient method. We use Taiwan registered mail to return the new and old passports to you and it is extremely secure and reliable.

If your current passport is not a 10-year passport, you must follow the instructions for “Renewing Five Year Validity Passport” or “Change Passport Data (for limited validity passports).” If you recently became 16 years or older and the new passport will be your first 10-year passport, please follow instructions for “Renewing Five Year Validity Passport.

To renew by mail:

  1. Complete application form (DS-82) including social security number and Taiwan contact telephone and address.
  2. Enclose two 2" x 2" (5cm x 5cm) color passport photos (head size 1" to 1 3/8") with a white background.  Photos should be taken within the past 6 months.
  3. If you have changed your name, include the original or a certified true copy of the court order or marriage certificate.  If you are requesting other changes, include all supporting documentation.  
  4. Mail the above items with your current passport, a US$75 local bank draft (Cashier’s Check) (本地銀行的美金匯票 ) payable to "American Institute in Taiwan" with no other amendments or notations (such as "Not Negotiable"), and a stamped (NT$50 postage) self-addressed envelope to the American Citizen Services office at one of the following addresses:

  1. AIT will use your envelope to return the passport to you via registered mail in approximately 3 weeks.

To renew in person:

The following items are required:

  1. passport
  2. completed application form (DS-82) with Taiwan contact number and address
  3. two 2" x 2" (5cm x 5cm) color passport photos (head size 1” to 1 3/8”) with a white background, taken within the past 6 months
  4. US$75 fee, payable by cash (NT$ or US$) or with a major credit card
  5. If you have changed your name, include the original or a certified true copy of the court order or marriage certificate. If you are requesting other changes, include all supporting documentation.

Your passport will be ready in approximately 3 weeks and will be sent to you by courier. Your previous passport will be cancelled and returned to you during your appointment. AIT will not cancel valid visas remaining in the old passport.

If you have an emergency travel need and can provide proof of a paid itinerary for travel in less than one week, you may apply for a limited validity emergency passport which will be issued while you wait. Emergency passports are valid for one year only and cannot be extended (they should be replaced with regular passports within one year). Pages cannot be added to emergency passports.

In the case of an emergency, if there are no appointments available in Taipei before your scheduled departure, you may come to AIT to apply for an emergency passport without an appointment Monday through Friday between 8:30 - 11:30 AM and 1:30 - 3:00 PM. We will attempt to assist you as expeditiously as possible. However, applicants with appointments have priority.

RENEWING FIVE-YEAR-VALIDITY PASSPORTS:

If you are renewing a five-year passport or replacing a limited passport you must apply in person. 

Parents of children under sixteen, please note the additional requirements below. 

Applicants whose previous U.S. passport expired more than one year ago may be asked to provide additional valid photo ID (showing name in English), such as a Taiwan passport or U.S. driver's license.  The following items are required:
  1. passport
  2. completed application form (DS-11) with Taiwan contact number and address
  3. two 2” x 2” (5cm x 5cm) color passport photos (head size 1” to 1 3/8”) with a white background, taken within the past 6 months
  4. US$85 fee, payable by cash (NT$ or US$) or with a major credit card.  Applicants over sixteen applying for their first ten-year passport, and adult applicants whose passports expired more than five years ago must pay a total fee of US$100.
  5. If you have changed your name, bring the original or a certified true copy of the court order or marriage certificate.  If you are requesting other changes, include all supporting documentation.

Your passport will be ready in about three weeks and will be sent to you by courier.  Your previous passport will be cancelled and returned to you during your appointment. AIT will not cancel valid visas remaining in the old passport.

REQUIREMENTS FOR CHILDREN UNDER SIXTEEN:

Both parents must execute the application for a child under sixteen. The child him/herself must also be physically present for the application. In addition to the items required for five-year passports listed above, the following additional items are required for a child under sixteen:

  1. original or certified true copy of the child's U.S. birth certificate or Consular Report of Birth Abroad
  2. valid photo ID for both parents with name in English (such as a US, Taiwan or other passport or US driver's license) that matches the names on the child's birth certificate or Consular Report of Birth Abroad

When applying for a child whose previous passport photograph was taken before age two, parents must bring a series of "growing photos" of the child beginning with baby photos and continuing through the child's current age.  Photos showing the child with the parents are also helpful. You may be required to provide additional documents, such as the child’s Taiwan passport, to establish the child’s identity.

If one parent cannot appear to execute the application, the parent who appears must also bring the following items:
  1. signed, notarized consent from the absent parent giving permission to issue a passport to the child
  2. the absent parent's valid photo ID (or a certified copy) with name in English that matches the name on the child's birth certificate or Consular Report of Birth Abroad

Special Circumstances:

  • Divorce:  If the parents are divorced, the applying parent must provide a court order granting custody of the child to the applying parent. 
  • Death:  If one parent is deceased, the applying parent must bring the original or certified copy of the death certificate.  If both parents are deceased, the guardian must provide both death certificates and/or proof of guardianship. 
  • Whereabouts unknown:  If the location of one parent is unknown, the applying parent must bring a written statement in English noting the date of last contact with the absent parent, efforts made to locate the parent, and any other relevant information.  A Consular officer will make a determination on a case-by-case basis.  More evidence may be required.

ADDING PASSPORT PAGES:

If you need additional pages in your passport, please use our mail-in procedures. We strongly encourage you to use this highly efficient method. We use Taiwan registered mail to return the passport to you and it is extremely secure and reliable.

Pages are added free of charge.  Under CFR 51.6, visa pages will not be added to "any passport which has been materially changed in physical appearance or composition, or which includes unauthorized changes, obliterations, entries or photographs".  This determination is made by the consular officer.

Applications for pages in minors' passports may be signed and submitted by one parent.

  1. Complete and sign application form (DS-4085) with Taiwan contact telephone and address
  2. Enclose your valid U.S. passport
  3. Include a self-addressed, stamped (NT $50 postage) envelope for AIT to return your passport to you
  4. Mail it to the American Citizen Services office at:

  5. AIT will use your envelope to return the passport to you via registered mail in approximately 3 weeks.

To add pages in person:

The following items are required:

  1. A valid U.S. passport
  2. A completed and signed application form (DS-4085) with Taiwan contact telephone and address
  3. The pages will be added while you wait, within 60-90 minutes.

If you have proof of a paid travel itinerary and there are no appointments available before your scheduled departure, you may come to AIT in Taipei to add pages without an appointment Monday through Friday between 8:30 - 11:30 AM and 1:30 - 3:00 PM.  We will attempt to assist you as expeditiously as possible.  However, applicants with appointments have priority.

CHANGING PASSPORT DATA REPLACE LIMITED VALIDITY PASSPORT:

We cannot extend passports or make amendments.  If you would like to change your passport information, or have a limited passport that is about to expire, you will be issued a new passport.

If you have a valid U.S. passport issued less than one year ago and have changed your identifying information (such as name change due to marriage), need to extend the validity of a limited passport, or there was a printing error in your passport, you are eligible to file a passport re-application.

  2. Complete application form (DS-5504) including Taiwan contact telephone and address.
  3. Enclose two 2" x 2" (5cm x 5cm) color passport photos (head size 1" to 1 3/8") with a white background.  Photos should be taken within the past 6 months.
  4. If you have changed your name, include the original or a certified true copy of the court order or marriage certificate.  If you are requesting other changes, include all supporting documentation.
  5. There is no fee.  Mail the above items with your current passport and a stamped (NT$50 postage) self-addressed envelope to the American Citizen Services office at one of the following addresses:

  6. AIT will use your envelope to return the new and old passports to you via registered mail in approximately 3 weeks. AIT will not cancel valid visas remaining in the old passport.

LOST OR STOLEN PASSPORTS:

Emergency passports are valid for one year only and cannot be extended (they should be replaced with regular passports within one year). Pages cannot be added to emergency passports.

In the case of an emergency, if there are no appointments available in Taipei before your scheduled departure, you may come to AIT to apply for an emergency passport without an appointment Monday through Friday between 8:30 - 11:30 AM and 1:30 - 3:00 PM. The following items are required:

  1. written report of lost or stolen passport from the nearest National Immigration Agency (http://www.immigration.gov.tw).  (Required to depart Taiwan.)
  2. two 2” x 2” (5cm x 5cm) color passport photos (head size 1” to 1 3/8”) with a white background, taken within the past 6 months
  3. valid photo identification (in English) as proof of identity
  4. birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or expired U.S. passport as proof of U.S. citizenship, or certified copies of these items.  (A regular photocopy of the missing passport is not proof of citizenship, but may be useful to research your citizenship.)
  5. completed application form (DS-11) and lost or stolen form (DS-64)  
  6. US$100 fee for adults and US$85 for minors.  There may also be a US$45 fee for a search of the passport files.  

After you have received a replacement passport from AIT, you must return to the nearest National Immigration Agency office where you filed the initial lost/stolen passport report. There, you must apply for an Exit Permit. An Exit Permit is required in order to leave Taiwan using this new passport.

FEES:

In Taipei, fees may be paid in either US or NT dollars or by credit card. In Kaohsiung, fees may be paid in either NT dollars or by credit card.

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club and Discover. We do not accept personal checks or travelers checks.

Ten-year passport renewal - US$75.
Five-year passport renewal -

US$85 for applicants under 16;

US$100 for applicants 16 or over who are applying for their first ten-year validity passport, and adult applicants whose passports expired more than five years ago.

Lost/stolen passport replacement -

US$100 for adults

US$85 for minors;

US$45 file search fee, if necessary.
